2010 Annual Summer School in Indigenous Mental Health Research

The Network for Aboriginal Mental Health Research (NAMHR) summer school is open to graduate students, professionals and others interested in developing their knowledge and skills in Aboriginal mental health research methods and methodologies. The fee to attend is $100 ($50 for NAMHR affiliates and students). Travel and expenses are not included.

Ecohealth 2010

The theme "Global Ecohealth Challenges; Multiple Perspectives" will be the focus of the third biennial conference of the International Association for Ecology and Health (IAEH). Hosted at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the Ecohealth 2010 conference is bringing together academic institutions, government bodies and civil society groups to discuss the major challenges facing people, wildlife and ecosystems internationally in 2010 and the future. The perspectives of peoples most vulnerable to the harms of ecosystem destruction, including Indigenous peoples, women, and young people are a key focus. NCCAH Academic Leader, Margo Greenwood, is participating as a plenary speaker on a panel debate addressing Indigenous Perspectives.

Aboriginal Land & Water

This Insight Information conference for Chiefs, Community Leaders and Band Council Members, as well as community members, government and land use professionals, is aimed at developing strategies to address challenges in managing land and water issues based on community and traditional values. The conference will focus on recent develoments in water management issues, including topics related to providing sustainable drinking water. Strategies for achieving economic benefits without sacrificing the lands and resources critical to community and traditional values will also be developed. Aboriginal Vision Health Conference
October 22-23, 2010

The Vision Institute of Canada, in affiliation with the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry and the Canadian Association of Optometrists, is hosting a first-in-Canada national conference on Aboriginal Vision Health. The event aims to increase awareness about the looming epidemic of preventable vision loss that, within the next few years, threatends to result from the high levels of diabetes among Aboriginal adults and children. More than 400 optometresis, optometric assistants and invited guests will attend. Canadian optometrists, who provide over 80% of the comprehensive eye examinations in Canada, can expect to learn about vision health issues facing Aborginal people, while Aboriginal leaders and health-care workers will learn about the potential epidemic of preventable vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy facing Aboriginal populations. Guest speakers include Dr. Jay Wortman, MD, whose dietary research on Aboriginal health is featured in the documentary My Big Fat Diet, and Dr. Ann C. Macaulay, of the University of Montreal, who has presented her research findings on diabetes among Aboriginal Canadians to national and international audiences. This event is sponsored in part by the National Collaborating Centre for Aboriginal Health.

4th International meeting on Indigenous child health

Join with the Canadian Paediatric Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics, in collaboration with the Indian Health Service, US Department of Health and Human Services and the First Nations, Inuit and Aboriginal Health Branch, Health Canada, for the 4th International Meeting on Indigenous Child Health. All health care providers and researchers who work with children, youth and families in American Indian, Alaska Native, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities are invited to share model programs and research, learn about prevalent health problems, and acquire practical skills for use in community settings.
